Socorro is an amazing dive destination.
We love the place and we love diving there.
But… are the park fees too high?
- Amazing giant mantas
- Amazing sharks
- Amazing super-friendly dolphins
Please tell us what you think. It will take less than 3-minutes to complete our survey.
Some background…
We’ve been running trips to Socorro since 1978 and have seen enormous changes.
There were no park fees back then, but also no protection. We were plagued with illegal longline fishermen, and seiners were setting nets right around dive sites like The Boiler. Sometimes they would even abandon 1-kilometre-long seine nets on the lava flows.
It was heartbreaking, and yes, we got into plenty of fights and conflicts with the fishermen.
Fast-forward 30+ years…
Kudos to the Government of Mexico for stepping up over the last 30 years with real conservation, protection, and enforcement. Socorro has become an oasis, the jewel of Mexico. But these efforts take funding.
So… how much is too much?
At Nautilus, we fully support the necessity of park fees, but how much is too much?
We partially subsidize the park fees, capping guest contributions at USD $172 per day. But that’s a lot more than the $2/day guests were paying not that long ago.
So we are asking:
- • Do these park fees make you think twice about booking a trip to Socorro?
- • Are you considering other destinations with more reasonable park fees?
