Location: Ketchikan, southeast Alaska
Comments: Ketchikan Airport is located across the channel and on a different island than the city of Ketchikan. Interestingly and coincidentally, Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedos Island while Socorro Island, our main winter destination, is one of the islands in the Revillagigedo archipelago.Small world huh?! Wonder if it was the same guy who named both places in the late 18th century after the Spanish viceroy of the same name? The mid to late 18th century is when the Spanish, English and Russian explorers were at their busiest mapping out the coast. Anyways, the airport is serviced by 2 ferries that run back and forth to Ketchikan as well as float planes, a water taxi and a berth for itinerant vessels, skiffs, and the like. I got a big kick out of speeding across to the airport in the inflatable to drop my girlfriend Lalitha off and tying up at the “short term parking” dock, reading the sign at the dock and dutifully putting $5 in an envelope with the name of our skiff on it and then stuffing the envelope into a rusty old piece of pipe per the posted instructions. Bit different than dropping someone off at Vancouver International Airport!!
