Comments: So what the heck does a see-through great white shark cage for Guadalupe Island have to do with scuba diving and kayaking at Inian Island in southeast Alaska? For that matter, what the heck is a see-through great white shark cage? Well, I stay in constant contact with our shore office via satellite email when I am at sea. There is always lots of stuff going on and I like to be in the loop. The start of our Guadalupe great white shark season is only 6 weeks away and there is a flurry of activity on our end as we finalize our permits, ensure that supplies have been ordered with confirmed delivery dates, get the shark cages ready to go and market the last available berths on the 13 trips that we are offering this season.
One thing that recently came up is the suggestion by my friend Tomas in Ensenada to install a sheet of clear lexan as the deck of one of our “transom cages.” It is a pretty cool concept! The idea is that the floor will be completely clear and see-through (hence the see-through great white shark cage) and the divers will feel like there is nothing between their feet and the ocean bottom 250 feet below. Nothing that is, except for 17 foot long great white sharks swimming around below the cages. I LOVE this idea and we are going to do our darndest to get it done in time for this season. Forgive my digression from describing our experiences in Alaska but this is something that I am pretty excited about. I can’t wait to try it out myself! Cheers.
