The animals of the Mexico Sardine Run are really something—REALLY SOMETHING! How do you describe a giant bryde’s whale appearing 20 to 30 feet away in indigo blue water, gulping its way through poor frightened sardines! Or the sight of super-fast marlin streaking their way around you. Or as happened last December, humpback whale mommas with newborn calves swimming right past you!!
Please check out Allie’s video from one trip last fall. It’s an exciting and amazing must see!!!
The Nautilus difference? Why sign up for one of these trips? How do we avoid crowding on the bait balls? Why did BBC Blue Planet 3 charter us for 4 weeks last season? Our spotter airplane makes a big difference for sure. Working with local panga captains, guys like Cappie Gabino, who knows these waters like the back of his hand. He has 40 years of experience with bait balls. (He also has super nice fast pangas). And now, new for 2024, we are staging early in the morning in a way only possible from a liveaboard.
After anchoring overnight in the calm entrance to Mag Bay, we now get underway before sunrise, working to get on the bait balls as soon as there is enough daylight. This will give us hours and hours of having the bait balls all to ourselves before the day boat arrives. A late morning break, brunch, and relax in your air-conditioned comfort liveaboard. And then back out on the water mid-afternoon when the day boats return to shore. We will stay with the bait balls as long as possible, hopefully until dark.
Spotter airplane + liveaboard + local expertise + splashing at first light (or sleep in, if you prefer!) = the ultimate way to experience the Mexico Sardine Run.
