Captain’s Noon Reports – Explorer – 2024-11-17

NEX is at south end of San Benedicto today. Wind is strong northerly 20kts and gusting, sky overcast, air (and eyes and mouths and boat) full of ash from the volcano, air temp 25C.

When we arrived last night around 0100 there were 3 other boats: Quino, Valentina, and Adventure. Southern Sport showed up this morning but Valentina has left. Somehow in all the chaos we got the 2pm and 5pm spot for the Canyon.

The two morning dives we did at the lava flow. Been an entertaining morning watching boats anchor then blow away then reset their anchor then watch them dragging and drifting past another boat by 30meters, good times. NEX anchor holding strong.

On the first dive where we dropped was really low viz, there was a manta around and some small stuff in the sand and rocks but not a great dive. Dive 2 better, they found some more clear water at the lava flow closer to the Canyon side and saw hammerheads and a manta.

This afternoon we’ll jump at Canyon. Water temp has been 27C, viz on first dive 2-7m, on dive 2 up to 15m, current mild.

Today is our last day of diving and we’ll depart tonight after dinner taking our time with the weather tonight so we can get back to Cabo in time for planned arrival on Tuesday morning.
