Today was our first day of diving for this expedition to the Islas Revillagigedo, commonly known as the Socorro Islands. The island of Socorro is actually only one of a group of 4 islands featuring great big-animal diving with the chance to see Giant Pacific Mantas, dolphins, hammerheads and many other species of sharks at all 4 islands.
We departed yesterday morning from Cabo San Lucas and enjoyed some humpback whale watching for the first hour as we slowly put the baja behind us. After a bit of a bumpy start the seas calmed down and the rest of the transit was fairly comfortable. On arrival at San Benedicto we headed to the south end of the island and had 3 great dives at “The Canyon”. Lots of hammerhead sharks around today with small groups of 4-5 encountered by most divers anda larger school of 20-30 observed by several divers who spent more time near the cleaning station. 2 or 3 giant pacific mantas were also seen cruising around the divers on the first dive, and again a smaller one on dive 2. A special treat today also with several big Dusky sharks approaching the divers very boldly, the 9-10 ft sharks coming easily within 10 ft of the divers on several occasions.
