My wife and I have a ritual of enjoying a wonderful gin and tonic and watching the sunset when we are upcoast relaxing at our cottage. It’s a nice way to end the day and in fact, started me on the bad habit of usually ordering a gin and tonic when riding the airlines. Those gin and tonics always come with a plastic straw – something I never thought about until now.
I’m not sure who the researchers are in the video clip below. And I am not sure I agree with the idea of pulling a straw out of the nose of an olive-ridley turtle leaving the poor guy bleeding afterwards. We simply don’t have enough information to make an informed opinion. In fact, I am not even sure about the veracity of the statistics quoted in the attached article but why take a chance?? I think that taking all the plastic straws off our boats (and ordering my gin and tonics naked without a straw) is one small step that we can take. And in fact, every step really does count.
