We spent basically all day interacting with a big pod of false killer whales; sometimes from a distance to give them space and other times from our RHIB. We would move along next to the pod and they would come to check us out several times. We saw them hunting from a distance and jumping out of the water in front of us. We also got our guests in the water to swim with them when they came close to our boat.
Later in the afternoon they seemed more relaxed with our presence and were becoming more comfortable getting closer to us. They seemed curious when we were getting in the water and finally one of them stopped swimming and just floated at the surface waiting for Gabriela to catch up with him and allowed her to get extremely close. So close that she could’ve touched him. Another adult false killer whale joined the area and they were extremely playful and interactive with us while we were just floating at the surface. After a couple of minutes they decided to move on and join the rest of the pod, leaving us with our hearts full and big smiles on our faces.
Another great day in the Sea of Cortez!
