A great day on the Sea of Cortez!

Today we saw a pod of fin whales! I’d never seen a whale before and it was an incredible experience! There were 2 or 3 of them and we saw them surface several times. As we were getting ready to head back to the mothership one of the whales surprised us because it blew a bubble net and surfaced about 3 meters off our our starboard side! Our guides said they had never seen this behavior in fin whales. Normally they see humpbacks exhibiting this behavior.
On our second outing we found a very active sea lion colony. Our guides educated us about sea lion behavior and we were able to get in the water with them. I’d never swam with sea lions before and it was so cool to see them swimming in front of us and underneath us! Because our guides had educated us on their behavior and the “do’s and don’ts” I felt really safe in the water with them and really enjoyed this experience!

We also saw several turtles and an awe inspiring display of dolphins jumping 10 feet in the air, chasing the wake of our boat!

All in all, it was a great day in the Sea of Cortez!
