Arrived back to Guadalupe Island last night at 1945 just as it was getting dark, dark. This morning we awoke to a glorius sunrise and clear skies all around the backside of Guadalupe at Shark Bay. To say the diving was good with the white sharks today would be wrong, it was exceptional. All day we had three or four animals and at time as many as five animals in sight. We saw the arrival of the first female sightings with a small female getting really close to a cage in a very relaxed and curious way, wait till you see this photo. No danger to our guests but you can imagine it makes you take a step back when you see the freight train coming and suddenly realize it is not stopping. Vis was also great today. You could watch the shark swim forward around the Nautilus Explorer about 5′ under the surface go around the bow behind the anchor chain and then return down the other side of the boat, back to the cages. From the cages to the bow is about 115 and the shark was well past the chain, so am thinking vis was at least 125-150′ (40-45 M) WOW!!! Temps in the water 70F (20C) and on top upper 70’s (23 ish)
Dr Mauricio Hoyes came by the boat this evening and entertained our guests with a presentation on the sharks and ecology above and below Guadalupe. He had much new information that he shared with us on his shark research. Most entertaining.
Talk to you again in a few days or follow our guest blogs as they come in from the boat.
