The bottlenose dolphin is one of the most commonly encountered dolphins in the world and we have a few resident pods here in the Revillagigedo Archipelago. They are also the most interactive dolphins around humans and their huge intelligence and ability to learn has been shown in many studies.
Our pods here are so friendly and really enjoy interacting with divers. They can spend whole dives swimming within arms reach to us, standing vertically in the water and posing for pictures. I have even seen them play with receptor buoys and even dangling octopuses over divers.
This trip was special because we encountered them on nearly every dive site we visited. It was great to swim and play with them! The best was at The Boiler where two mothers and small calves joined the group. Of course, the older dolphins were shielding the calves, but you really get the feeling the mothers are very proud of their offspring and enjoy showing them off to the divers. It’s these kind of special animal interactions you can expect here.
