What can I say about Roca Partida? Only that it is an amazing place. What this one small island has to offer stole our hearts throughout our stay there. It is awesome diving here – from the Whitetip sharks sleeping on top of each other inside the crevices of the rocks to the graceful and huge Galapagos and Silky sharks, we encountered them all.
It was an action-packed 3rd and 4th dive for me after witnessing a feeding frenzy between the magnificent giant tunas and sharks. To add to the excitement, we were surrounded by thousands of Mexican Creole fish, Galapagos and Silky sharks, bonitos, and occasionally a giant tuna passing outside the school of fish. Let us dive now into the details of my Roca Partida diving trip
Diving off Roca Partida
We arrived in Roca Partida to be greeted by this beautiful rock in the middle of nowhere. It was a scene that we have seen before only in glossy travel magazines!
I did not take much time to bond with this place and could feel a welcome vibe that I cannot explain. It was an out-of-the-world feeling that will remain with me for a very long time.
As we were preparing for our first dive, we saw a few humpback whales break the surface quite close to our boat Belle Amie. It seemed that they were inviting us to go play with them as they stayed for some time displaying wonderful acrobatics that caught our breath.
The first dive was challenging because the current was at both tips of the rock. At the same time, the current was picking up too. But this did not stop us from starting our dives. Even though there was nothing much to write home about in the first two, we hit pay dirt on our third dive when the action started.
We had barely jumped into the water when we were greeted by thousands of Mexican Creole fish. We finally realized that were in the middle of an upcoming feeding frenzy. I got very excited as soon as the big yellowfin tunas appeared followed by the Galapagos sharks and silkies. The last thing we knew, a bonito was being chased by a shark but was outrun by a giant tuna that took that poor fish in a flash. The tuna was followed by all the sharks feeding frenziedly on the leftovers.
It was such a rush that what happened next was a blur. All I remember is that sharks were everywhere, the fish was everywhere, and I was in the middle of an open ocean, taking in the beauty of Roca Partida and what nature had to offer. Experiencing the wonders of this place is something that I will always cherish.
The call of the Humpbacks
If I was to pick the highlight of the trip, hearing the call of the humpback whales underwater would win by a mile. It is not only a dream come true but something that I have only heard before in wildlife documentaries or movies. Hearing it first-hand underwater was a moment that I cannot describe in words.
Even though I heard their call only and did not come face-to-face with them, I can proudly say in the future that I have shared open ocean space with these magnificent creatures. Just hearing their melodious call made me bond with the whales and the ocean once again, a story that I will cherish and will be telling my friends and family for a long time! It is an experience that not everybody has the good fortune to come up against and if I get a chance to come back, I for sure will bring my whole family with me.
To sum it up, it was a dive experience for a lifetime and I am grateful for having a chance to be on this trip.
