Is Diving With Sharks Dangerous?

For many Nautilus guests, the ultimate rush is diving with sharks in Mexico — a wild experience that fills divers with awe and deep respect for these apex predators. Imagine swirling schools of hammerheads, tiger sharks in the blue, and mantas sweeping by just meters away. But one question always comes up: ‘Is it safe… diving with sharks?‘ Sure, Hollywood gives sharks a bad reputation from movies like The Meg and Sharknado. But in reality, shark encounters can be perfectly safe when done responsibly.

Diving with Sharks: Staying Calm When Your Heart’s Racing

In our earlier blog, The World’s Wildest Diving – How to Keep It Safe, we shared tips to help you choose a safe liveaboard operator. Now, let’s take a closer look at how to stay safe while diving with sharks. Is it dangerous to dive with sharks? How can you stay safe diving with sharks? In short, it relies on awareness, good guides, and being prepared. Once you’ve got that foundation, that’s what turns a great shark adventure into a safe one.

So what’s it really like to look a giant manta ray in the eye? How does it feel to have a dozen hammerheads glide right past you? Or to watch a shimmering ball of fish part to reveal a large tiger shark that is almost too close for comfort?

Diving with sharks is enough to make any diver’s pulse quicken. And yet, the secret to the best shark encounters isn’t adrenaline — it’s calm. Your behavior sets the tone. With that in mind, here are a few simple ways to stay safe and confident during any shark dive.

Top Tips for Diving with Sharks Safely

  • ⦿ Stay neutral: Maintain a steady, controlled position and avoid chasing animals.
  • ⦿ Keep calm: Fast movements, loud noises, or bright flashes can alter animal behavior.
  • ⦿ Give space: Let sharks and mantas approach on their terms. Respectful distance keeps everyone comfortable.
  • ⦿ Follow your guide’s lead: Your dive team knows the site, the currents, and the animals’ habits — their position should put you right where the best action (and safety) align.
  • ⦿ Keep an eye on the blue: You’re in a 360-degree environment. Sharks often appear from below or behind you. Part of the magic is spotting them first!
  • ⦿ Eye contact: Try to face the shark head-on and maintain eye contact because it shows them you are aware, like an equal. Not passive, like prey.

It’s the contrast of adrenaline and serenity that makes diving with sharks so unforgettable. Stay calm and composed, and the ocean will reward you. Still not convinced? These stories from our guests say it all:

“Close encounters”

…The tiger shark was very close to me and felt my heart beating a lot because of the adrenaline and excitement of the moment…”

“Diving with sharks in Mexico was unreal!”

Diving with sharks at El Canyon was unreal! I’ve never seen so many sharks in one place. They glide past, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, giving you a quick look as if to say, “I’ve noticed you too…”. Seeing them move through the water in full size, just meters away, is incredibly thrilling. It fills you with real respect and admiration.

It’s funny how when you’re surrounded by sharks, you’re the one hoping they’re not scared off by you. You move slowly, breathe gently, and try not to blow too many bubbles in your excitement.

“Sharks everywhere!”

The first dive was not like any check dive I have done before… Sharks were everywhere: white tips, silver tips, Galapagos, and even a tiger! We were even blessed by a manta during the safety stop.

The second dive was even better. A school of hammerheads was there to welcome us into the water. Again, too many whitetips, silver tips, and Galapagos to count. Several tigers swam along with us. A tuna passed right in front of us, and a manta ray spent some time dancing in front of our eyes...”

Pre-Dive Safety Checklist

Of course, safety is about more than respecting the marine life. It also relies on well-maintained equipment, good preparation, and following normal safe diving practices. Before you giant stride or backroll into the blue, take a moment for this simple pre-dive safety check:

  • ✅ Standard buddy check – ensure all gear and gauges are functioning
  • ✅ Review hand signals – they aren’t universal
  • ✅ SMB and signaling devices ready
  • ✅ Dive plan and pickup point understood
  • ✅ Emergency plan reviewed
  • ✅ Camera settings checked — so you’re not distracted underwater
  • ✅ Physically rested and hydrated
  • ✅ Calm mindset: clear your head and get ready to make great memories

That pause before each dive can prevent hours or even days of trouble later.
