Legislation has been introduced in Parliament to ban the import of shark fins in Canada. DEMA is urging all interested parties to support this legislation (Bill C-380) to stop the import of fins.
Sharks are apex predators and as such play a critical role in maintaining healthy, balanced marine ecosystems. The continuing practice of shark finning (removing the fins and discarding the remainder of the shark back into the sea) is having a devastating effect on shark species and populations around the world. By some estimates, up to 73 million sharks are killed each year for fins alone.
What can you do?
- Sign the petition in favor of Bill C-380 to support banning the import of shark fins into Canada.
- Print, sign and return the Petition to Parliament.
- Call or write a letter to your Member of Parliament.
- Request a meeting with your Member of Parliament.
- Host a Film screening at your store or home.
