Catch Me If You Can

We are onboard the Gallant Lady and for the past two days we have been following a pod of orcas that cruise along the coast of Baja California between Los Cabos and the bay of La Paz in the Sea of Cortez.

They are attracted along this shore by the presence of an incredible amount of sea life that can be found around this time of the year like huge pods of common dolphins, five to six different species of mobula and cownose rays, mahi mahi, marlins and pregnant female whale sharks. All of which are on the menu for orcas! The orcas are the real king of the ocean; praying on absolutely everything they meet (except humans of course).

So far we played a game of ‘catch me if you can’ with the pod but we have not yet met them up close. We came across so much sea life and our guests had an amazing time snorkeling with mobula rays, a pod of bottlenose dolphins (who had several babies and did some pretty impressive acrobatic jumps), and even some silky sharks that came up all the way to the surface for a close encounter that gave the snorkelers their share of adrenaline. Tomorrow we will have the aerial support to pin down our pod of orcas and get to meet these majestic animals.
