Amazing Giant Manta Ray behaviors

The mantas at Socorro Island are known for their size and their interactive behavior with divers. These mantas are some of the largest species of manta rays and they are known to approach divers and allow them to touch and interact with them. This, combined with clear waters and an abundance of other marine life, makes Socorro Island a popular destination for diving and snorkeling.

Nautilus guests share their amazing experiences with giant Oceanic Manta Rays and dolphins on their trip onboard Nautilus:

They actually look you in the eye

“We are at the half way point of our Socorro trip and of the many highlights, the experience of diving with Manta Rays tops them all, and is hard to even put into words. Other-worldly. We saw them on most dives and with each successive dive at a given site, they became more and more interactive, approaching our group several times, often gently gliding overhead as close as a few feet. They actually look you in the eye.”

The giant manta rays showed great intelligence, interaction, and expressiveness

“My family had an amazing experience diving with DM Peter on the Nautilus Undersea Hunter. We saw five giant Manta rays in all the colors and patterns available on our third dive – black and chevron. DM Peter gave us great tips and guidance to maximize our experience. One Chevron Giant Manta in particular showed a lot of interest towards us and did multiple passes – getting closer and closer each time. On our fourth dive the same chevron manta ray recognized us and did the same thing! She dove down closer and closer to us each pass until she was only a couple feet above each diver. The giant manta rays showed great intelligence, interaction, and expressiveness, just like DM Pascal told us in his Manta presentation. This was one of my most incredible diving experiences I’ve had and I will definitely be back for more.”

These graceful creatures glided through the water, providing us with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Today was an unforgettable day of diving in Soccoro Island. As we descended into the clear, warm waters, we were greeted by an abundance of marine life. Schools of colorful fish swam past us, but the highlight of our dives was the appearance of several manta rays. These graceful creatures glided through the water, providing us with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
We were also lucky to see a few sharks during our dives, including Galapagos sharks and hammerheads. These magnificent creatures are often misunderstood, but it was fascinating to observe them in their natural habitat. Their presence added an element of excitement to our dive and made the experience even more memorable.
Socorro Island truly lives up to its reputation as a world-class diving destination.
In addition to the amazing underwater experiences, the service on board was outstanding. The crew was friendly, knowledgeable, and always available to assist us with any needs. They ensured that we had a comfortable and safe diving experience, and their attention to detail made all the difference. Whether it is helping us gear up for our dives or serving delicious meals, the crew is going above and beyond to make our trip memorable.”
