Illegal tuna clipper at Roca Partida??

We checked the radar and discovered a large (225ft??) target doing tight circles off Roca Partida and clearly in the Biosphere Reserve. I suspected that it was a large tuna clipper and that they were watching us through their binoculars because as soon as we launched one of our inflatables, all the lights on the other ship blinked off. The illegal boat then started jinking around at high speed (15 knots plus), apparently doing it’s best to stay away from the inflatable.

In transit to San Bendicto Island

It’s always a bit of a funny feeling to be on our little 116ft steel island, surrounded by ocean, without land or any other boats in sight. This is one deserted stretch of ocean and on a number of our transits from Baja California to San Benedicto Island, we have steamed for 24 hours without seeing another vessel. Open ocean swim in transit to San Benedicto Island

Because it was such a hot and calm day, Dave decided to make way off the ship and open the pool up for open ocean snorkelling and swimming. Given that they were in 10,000 feet of water, it was fairly certain that nobody would see the bottom! However, guests did see lots of different kinds of jellyfish as well as some pelagic tunicates. We figure that open ocean splashes are always a good bet, time permitting, as you never know what you might see. On the last trip, our guests actually saw a giant manta ray swim past in open ocean!

Rough crossing from Socorro Island

Most of our crossings to and from Socorro Island are pretty good. It’s unusual to have an uncomfortable crossing. Last night started out silky smooth with a remarkably low swell. Unfortunately, the winds picked up around 0300 and we now have a very short, steep sea which is very odd for the open ocean.

Flat calm seas enroute San Benedicto Island

ow! Yet another flat calm day on the open ocean. We’re on our way back to San Benedicto Island after turning the ship around, and it’s even calmer than our last trip. It was rougher in Cabo San Lucas harbour with all the pangas, dive skiffs and jet skis flitting around than it is out here!
