    Good Fun: First Day Dives

First time on a Nautilus boat, 4th time on a liveaboard. Multiple trips to the Pacific. The lower end rooms are large and at 6’6” I am very comfortable. The dive masters did a better job than I was expecting. I have been on pacific liveaboards that you have minimal guidance in currents. Entrance into the zodiac and out is well orchestrated with good safety rules. Totally different diving than Indonesia or the Philippines. I was pleased to see variety of angels and butterfly fish in a environment with minimal soft and hard coral. Multiple resting white tip reef sharks, 3 mantas, hammerheads, and good fun on the first day. Diving depths are generally deeper so Nitrox certification is a good idea. I am using a 7mm but many people are comfortable in a 5mm. Temps 75. Alan Trip leader for Aquatic World of Syracuse NY

  • Everyone should see these great white sharks – Guadalupe, October 26th 2012

I have had a great time.  Accomodation was comfortable.  Every aspect of the vessel was exemplary.  the shark diving was excellent.  this is best liveaboard vessel I have ever been on.    Brett Gilliam.   Today was the second dive of my life.   Last time was in Alaska when Captain Mike threw me in the water in a drysuit with a rangy grizzly bear on the beach.   I was not left with a warm and fuzzy desire to go back on the Nautilus Explorer but I was persuaded to join a Guadalupe Island trip.  Today was FANTASTIC!!   I would never have believed how beautiful and graceful the great white sharks are.  everyone should see this.  I’m going to Socorro Island for sure now.   Lalitha Rupesinghe.

  • This was an extra special trip with most of the well known people in the dive industry onboard celebrating Stan Waterman's 89th birthday – Guadalupe, October 24th 2012

We have just left Guadalupe Island and are heading back into the port of Ensenada in northern Baja California after our latest expedition to dive with the white sharks of Guadalupe. This week was an extra special trip put on by the Historical Diving Society. Featuring some of the biggest and most well known names in the industry including pioneers like Stan Waterman, Ernie Brooks, Howard and Michele Hall, Valerie Taylor and many more,  this trip was a celebration of Stan Watermans 89th birthday. For those who are not familiar with the name Stan Waterman he was involved in the filming of the original Jaws, Blue Water White Death and countless other productions. His voice is one of the most recognized in the industry as a narrator for underwater productions. This was my second time in the past 5 years that I have had the pleasure of having Stan onboard and he is as classy, witty and charming as the last time. He’s an amazing story teller and he has a lot of them to tell! We delayed our departure by a day while waiting for what was left of Hurricane Paul to pass through the area and finally got…

  • On our first dive, I counted at least 5 individual great white sharks circling us.. they got bolder as the afternoon passed.. Guadalupe. September 29, 2012.

After a very pleasant 185 nautical mile (approx 330km) crossing from Ensenada, Mexico we arrived late last night to the shark lovers paradise island of Guadalupe. Shortly after arrival we had our cages in the calm waters of the sheltered north-east bay and were ready for action at first light this morning. On our first submersible cage dive of the day at 0800 I counted at least 5 individual white sharks circling the two submersible cages. Early on they were keeping their distance, occasionally making a close pass by the cage to check out the humanoids trapped inside. As the day went on they grew bolder and we spent most of the afternoon watching them make fast approaches at us from all depths, above and below, and making tight circles around us with lots of awe-inspiring eye contact. The water was beautiful today with a clear blue 120 ft of visibility and our adopted sealion ‘Toto’ spent a good part of the day with us following, circling and generally antagonizing the whiteys!  We couldn’t have asked for a better day to start the trip with and looking forward to more great shark diving tomorrow. • The great white sharks are so gracious in their ways and honestly, who is looking at who??? Guadalupe. September 25, 2012

This has been a great day for diving with the sharks ˆ especially for the first-timers!!  We have had at least 2 sharks circling the cages at each dive, mostly males.  However, on the third dive, we did have a female measuring about 5.5 metres long. The males are big too, measuring from just over 3 meters to around 4.5 meters.  Cage-diving is not scary at all, we are all very safe inside the cages and looking at the majestic way of the Great Whites cruising was just magnificent!!  They are so gracious in their ways and honestly, who is looking at who?!!!  Are we, the humans, looking at the sharks, or are the sharks looking at us like we are the exhibits!!  This really has been a special day!!
