Greeted by the large resident female tiger shark

Today was our first day of diving here at Revillagigedo and it feel so good to be back on board. The Canyon at San Benedicto did not fail to impress once gain. The water was clear and a slight current was taking us on a westerly direction. Chevron mantas greeted us as we entered the water on the first dive followed by dusky sharks, silver tips, silky sharks, hammerheads, and more mantas.

I worked with giant manta identification to differentiate each individual, and thus evaluate their population. This helps to obtain important information including how many individuals are in the biosphere reserve, how many mantas are present every season and if there are new mantas every season. It also includes which islands attract more mantas, how many females and males are there, and how the mantas move between the islands.

Sten Sees a Sailfish & a Tiger Shark!

As we were leaving the deeper water, coming out of the Boiler, I had just sent up my SMB when a huge sailfish came straight up from the deep, preparing to go for the SMB!! So cool, and such a surprise! It took a couple turns around the floating SMB with its sail out and then took off. IT WAS SO BIG! Not long after we had a fat, good-sized Tiger shark checking us out. She was in no rush but kept a bit off in the distance.

A Tiger Shark and more at The Canyon

We had a big tiger shark greet us as we were cruising along the lava flow, it was about 12-14ft long. I have never seen so many young silver tips, I counted 18 at one time, plus a dolphin, huge hammerheads and silkies! What a way to do a check out dive!
