Location: Los Islotes, Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico The crew sent me a satellite message today to say that the diving they have been experiencing in the Sea of Cortez is the best they have seen there in quite a while.   We are getting reports of everything from tiger sharks in the Biosphere […]

Location: Shark Bay, Guadalupe Island, Baja California, Mexico Divemaster Buzz at the laptop here as Captain Mike is still on time off..  We are having a superb trip with lots of excellent white shark sightings and loads of interesting behaviour.  It’s funny how variable the diving can be as our last trip was the quietest […]

New Dive Sites, Blue Water Scuba Diving, Dolphin Diving; a True Expedition

Finally we went to a new site on the north east side of San Benedicto and found some interesting rock formations with lots of reef life and what appeared to be a moray eel the colour of a Clarion Angelfish. Definitely a place for further investigation. On the run home we came up with a list of possible names for the newly explored sites including Whale Sound, Booby Prize, The Act of Waiting on a Rock and Watching Barnacles although none have been adopted at this time. Maybe a few more dives on the sites will bring out the personality of the sites and the names will become obvious.

Dive of a Lifetime with 50 Dolphins at Socorro Island

Sten estimates that there were more than 50 dolphins interacting with the divers. I would have loved to have seen that. Oh yeah, Sten also reports that they saw a big tiger shark in 20 metres of water, a number of hammerhead sharks and a couple of mantas as well as all the regular fish commonly seen at Socorro Island. Sounds like an incredible day!!

Tiger shark at The Boiler, San Benedicto Island

Anyways, the visibility this morning 80ft plus and our divers had some great hammerhead, silvertip and galapagos shark sightings. Plus good old Lumpy, our tame leather bass with the broken jaw was there as always. I was very tempted to stay for another dive but flexibility is the name of this game and our guests wanted to move on to the Boiler on the west side of San Benedicto Island.

Fabulous day of diving with giant manta rays at San Benedicto Island

The giant manta rays were too playful and interactive at the Canyon today. Seriously. Our last dive day turned out to be fabulous, and one of the best days of the trip. The big animal diving at Socorro Island and San Benedicto Island can be wildly variable and while the Canyon was very quiet at the start of this trip, it was smoking hot today. A large school of hammerhead sharks (we estimate at least 100 animals) swam past the cleaning station with 20 or so of the sharks very close to our divers. Some of our divers were only half joking when they surfaced and complained that the overfriendly mantas wouldn’t get out of the way and allow the divers to get unobstructed photos of the hammerhead sharks!

Tiger shark 2 feet away at San Benedicto Island.

A couple of our guests are here to free dive instead of scuba dive which is always good fun. One of them has been free diving for over 30 years and had the experience of his career today when he came face to face with a tiger shark. He was on the surface resting between dives when a huge tiger shark came right in towards him at The Canyon dive site on San Benedicto Island. He says that the tiger shark was huge and just kept coming in closer and closer until it was only 2 feet away. Yes, 2 feet away!
