The moment that my bubbles had cleared from my entering the water I realized that I was looking into the tennis ball sized eye of a 4.5-meter Giant Manta. We hung there together motionless, studying each other. I swear that the deeper you look into a manta’s eye the deeper it looks into your soul.

A chevron manta WOW moment!

Our big WOW MOMENT was swimming with a 12ft Chevron Manta, taking pictures and being in complete awe of her(?) when suddenly a whale shark appeared out of the blue. A juvenile everyone said. We all got a chuckle of how the manta reacted when the whale shark came in.

Friendly chevron manta host!

Our diving started by being greeted by a friendly chevron manta, who joined us in our descent to the roaming Galapagos sharks. We drifted through bait balls while observing the whitetip sharks settling on their shelves for a day of rest. After spotting eels and distant hammerhead sharks we were again joined by our manta host.

Sharks, tuna, jacks, dream-like pelagic life!

In one moment we are completely engulfed in a school of cottonmouth jacks, the next moment, black trevally and large yellowtail charge through and split the school to find a meal. And the tuna… holy mackerel, the tuna!! Yellowfin tuna so healthy, you don’t realize just how big they are until they come close and dwarf the silvertip sharks next to you. Absolute perfection!

The manta met us immediately doing its dance for anyone who wanted to watch. As we were transfixed on this marvel a young whale shark decided to pass through, much to the dismay of the performing manta. The whale shark passed within feet of us making for some truly unsurpassed video.
